Generative Engine Optimization

Generative engine optimization. Cited by AI, not just ranked.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting a business named and cited in the answers that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews write. It builds on SEO and adds what AI engines need: direct answers, consistent facts, structure, and proof that others trust you.

What it is

A new place to be found. Or not.

Buyers used to search Google and click a result. More of them now ask an AI assistant and read one answer. That answer names a few companies, cites a few sources, and nobody else gets seen.

GEO is how you become one of the names. The term comes from a 2023 research paper by a Princeton and Georgia Tech team that measured which changes to a page made generative engines cite it more often. The short version: specific facts, quotable statements and cited sources moved the needle. Keyword stuffing did not.

It is not a trick and not a second website. It is the same site, written and structured so a machine can read it, quote it and trust it.

How it works

AI engines read the web like a hurried expert. Then they pick sources.

Four things decide whether an engine names you.

1

They retrieve, then write.

Most AI answers start with a live search. The engine pulls a handful of pages that match the question, reads them, and writes an answer with citations. If your page is not in that handful, you are not in the answer.

2

They prefer direct answers.

A page that answers the question in its first paragraph, with specifics, gets quoted. A page that circles the topic for 400 words gets skipped.

3

They check for agreement.

Engines weigh how often other sources say the same thing about you: reviews, directories, press, profiles. One claim on your own site is weak. The same claim in five places is evidence.

4

They need the door open.

Each engine has its own crawler (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended). A robots.txt rule or a firewall that blocks them makes the rest of the work pointless.

GEO vs SEO

Same foundation. Different finish line.

SEO earns a position in a list of ten links, and the click is yours to win. GEO earns a mention or a citation inside one written answer, and the reader may never click at all.

The groundwork is shared: a crawlable site, pages that answer real questions, and trust signals from outside your site. GEO adds the parts machines weigh more than people do: the answer up top, the same business facts everywhere, structured data, and sentences that are easy to quote.

You do not choose one. Google still sends most of the traffic, and the AI engines lean on the same pages Google already ranks.

How to do it

Six things that move the needle. In this order.

01 Open the door.Allow the AI crawlers in robots.txt and at the firewall, publish an llms.txt file, and make sure the pages that matter render as plain HTML without JavaScript.
02 Answer first.Every page and post answers its title question in the first 60 words, then earns the rest. Headings are the questions people actually ask.
03 Be specific.Numbers, names, dates, places. "Revenue grew from $1M to $9.3M" gets cited. "Significant growth" does not.
04 Say the same thing everywhere. One name, address, phone, description and category across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories and press. Engines cross-check.
05 Add structure.Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article and LocalBusiness schema, so the facts on the page are also facts a machine can read without guessing.
06 Earn third-party proof.Reviews, interviews, podcast appearances, local press and client mentions. Engines cite the sources that other sources cite.

For small business

Smaller companies have an edge here. Specificity.

National brands have scale, but AI engines answer specific questions, and a focused company can be the clearest answer in its category and its city. "Who does foundation repair in Chattanooga" is winnable in a way "best marketing company" never will be.

Most of the work is housekeeping: accurate profiles, real reviews, pages that say plainly what you do and where, and nothing blocking the crawlers.

The audit

Know where you stand before you spend.

A GEO audit checks crawler access, what the AI engines currently say about you, whether your pages answer anything directly, how consistent your business facts are across the web, and what structured data is in place.

Our free scan runs the first checks in about a minute. The Deep Dive goes through the rest by hand, alongside your SEO, advertising and sales.

How we do it

One foundation. Two kinds of visibility.

We started in 2012 building websites, and search has been part of the work ever since. GEO is the same discipline with a new reader. We fix the foundation, write pages that answer real questions, earn the trust signals, and track whether Google ranks you and whether the AI engines cite you.

Questions

GEO, answered.

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of making a business and its content more likely to be named and cited in answers written by AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Overviews.

SEO earns a ranking in a list of search results. GEO earns a mention or citation inside a single AI-written answer. They share the same foundation, and GEO adds direct answers, consistent business facts, structured data and third-party proof.

Most AI answers begin with a live retrieval step: the engine searches, reads a handful of pages, and writes an answer that cites them. GEO makes your pages the ones that get retrieved, read, trusted and quoted.

No. Google still sends most of the traffic, and AI engines lean heavily on pages that already rank. GEO is added on top of SEO, not instead of it.

Crawler access and business-fact fixes can show up in AI answers within weeks, because the engines retrieve live. Earning citations for competitive questions takes months, like SEO.

Yes, often more than for a large one. AI engines answer specific questions, and a focused company in a defined market can be the clearest answer. Most of the work is accuracy and plain writing, not budget.

Check robots.txt and your firewall for the AI crawlers, then ask the engines about your business and read what comes back. Our free GEO scan runs those checks automatically.
