Hutton & Smith burst onto the scene at the dawn of the craft beer revolution with a fresh recipe and a bold vision: to open their own brewery. The owners, former geologists from Las Vegas, chose Chattanooga, TN, drawn by its vibrant outdoor scene and rock-climbing opportunities. As locals ourselves, we quickly connected with their passion. Their challenge was clear: how do you launch a new brewery in a burgeoning market, blending a love for brewing with a deep appreciation for geology, and truly stand out? They needed more than just a logo; they needed a brand that spoke to their unique story and resonated with the community.

With a strong foundation in architecture, our team was uniquely positioned to take on the AIA Tennessee convention. Collaborating closely with event leaders, we developed the year’s central theme, “Impact” — exploring how thoughtful design shapes urban landscapes and creates meaningful connections with communities.
We set out to express the theme of “Impact” in a fresh, unexpected way through the event’s core visual identity. The concept began with a convention poster that layered translucent fabric over the word Impact, symbolizing how architecture weaves into and shapes the urban fabric of our cities. This striking visual became the foundation for the entire campaign, carried consistently across print materials, the website, and all digital content — creating a unified and meaningful design experience.
To keep things interesting, we made “living posters” using cinemagraphs (a mix of photos and videos) to promote the convention. We also managed their email campaigns, helped with scheduling, and put together the event program.
A major highlight of the convention was the launch of a global design competition aimed at reimagining the city’s overlooked alleyways. Our creative team developed the name “Passageways: Activating the Urban Alley Through Architecture”, capturing both the physical and conceptual transformation of these forgotten spaces. From there, we led the branding and website design, creating a platform that welcomed submissions from around the world. The “Passageways” initiative quickly gained international recognition and was featured in several prominent design publications — proving that small spaces can spark big ideas.
